Media 101

Everyone should know the effects of media. Yet that doesn't necessarily signify the fact that everyone does.
Through the colossal advancement of technology and the ever growing popularity of it in the 21st century, media has flourished in its uses and methods.
Once a simple way to convey messages, media now is manipulative, biased and even sardonic.
Newspapers, cell phones, televisions, radios, and the computer have established true global connection, sending, spreading and transferring messages within a matter of seconds. Yet nowadays this mass media has transfixed the human population with its abilities. When I say abilities, I mean the flashy pictures and catchy phrases. These pretty pictures and catchy phrases capture the attention of the audience and that gives the people in control of the media power. They have the power to manipulate a targeted audience-in other words propaganda. How are clothes sold? How do you know that your opinion of a certain culture or person was formed? Can you honestly say it was from first hand experience or did Google come in handy once again?
Most people do it with out realizing it, it’s so natural and an accepted fact that cell phones and the internet are within easy reach and accessed at least once a day.
And from the BBMs to the new Gossip Girl episode, a message it passed on.
And what is the effect of our technology obsessed world? Well tally up the hours between talking your friends face to face and talking to your friends through the phone or online. If you see that you spend more time talking to friends/family members through technology than face to face, and that being separated from an electronic device for more than 5 minutes, then you know your technology had overridden your life.
But don’t worry your one of the millions on our planet who do this.
Personally, I find it rude. I don’t think that I’ve seen any of my friends without their blackberry’s out of their hands. Even during class, teachers have accepted the fact that students will inevitably spend have of the class time BBMing. I can’t have a decent conversation without having my friends refer to their phones or Iphones or Blackberries it’s as if the phone itself has become the only means of them recollecting their thoughts.
It’s sad and irritating. I’m not ungrateful for our advanced technology, far from it. I’m just wary of the consequences that come out from overuse. Especially with the younger kids who have easy access to any information whether appropriate for them or not.

  1. very well made point! however, i don't agree with your statement that teachers have accepted that students will bbm for half of the class. at times we may be willing to overlook, but the truth of the matter is that teachers' eyes cannot be in all places at once. (sigh) i would prefer a check-your-electronics-at-the-door policy or a true learning with hand-held technology approach.
